ITINERARY:
DAY 01: GUATEMALA CITY / LANQUIN
Meet at Maya Expeditions office in Guatemala City by 7:00 a.m. for
an overland transfer to Lanquin in the highlands of Alta Verapaz.
En route visit of natural reserve "Biotopo Mario Dary".
Lunch in Coban (on your own). Visit the famous "Cuevas de Lanquin",
where the river's turquoise waters flow from the cave itself. Dinner
and lodge at Hotel Recreo in Lanquin.
Day 02: RIO cahabon
After breakfast, shuttle to put-in and a safety orientation, board
rafts and begin descent of the Rio Lanquin to its confluence with
the Rio Cahabon. Continue on the Cahabon, navigating some of the
river's largest and most difficult rapids. Dinner and camp on an
inviting beach near the village of Tamax.
Day 03: RIO cahabon
Breakfast and continue on through more challenging and exciting
rapids, placid pools perfect for swimming, pristine side creeks,
colorful bird life and beautiful scenery of remote and seldom seen
regions of the Alta Verapaz. Dinner and camp upstream of the spectacular
Cataract of Chulac.
Day 04: RIO cahabon / EL ESTOR
While preparing breakfast and breakdown campsite, transport rafts
and equipment around the unrunnable class VI rapid known as
Chulac Falls. After a short walk around the falls, board rafts at
the base of the last drops. Continue downstream through the Lower
Gorge, where the river enters a rugged canyon of unspoiled natural
beauty with a perfect mixture of exhilarating rapids tranquil pools
and natural hot springs we've dubbed The Little Paraiso. By mid-afternoon
reach the take-out point at the small village of Cahaboncito. Switching
from rafts to an awaiting vehicle, transfer overland a short distance
to the town of El Estor on the shores of Lago Izabal. Dinner and
overnight lodging in El Estor.
Day 05: EL ESTOR / RIO DULCE /
GUATEMALA
Early breakfast and board vehicle for land transfer back to Guatemala
City. On the way we can make a short visit to the hot springs of
"Finca Paraiso" or to Castillo de San Felipe, at Rio Dulce
Bridge, you have the opportunity to practice Bungee jumping if you
wish. 100 feet before splashing into the deep waters below.
Time Allowing: visit the Mayan ruins of Quirigua. Scrutinize the
rare zoomorphologic structures and the famous 3-dimensional facial
view stelae, associated with Copan found within this site.
Return transfer to Guatemala City. Lunch en route (on your own).
Arrive at Guatemala City late evening.
