Volcan Tajumulco
Volcan Tajumulco "The Highest Peak"
ALTITUDE: 4220 meters above sea level (13,715 feet)
MINIMUM AGE: 12 years
No. OF DAYS: 3 days/2 nights
CLASS III-IV (Intermediate/Challenging)
(The trail is not hard but the altitude can make it more difficult)
CODE: TAJ3
SEASON: Year Round / Best from November to June
LOCATION: San Marcos
Day 1: GUATE. CITY/XELA/SAN MARCOS
Leave Guatemala City in the morning, drive through the highlands
where we have the opportunity to see several traditional villages
and we can make a short stop to see Lake Atitlán from a lookout.
By mid day we arrive at Quetzaltenango (Xela for short, from its
Indian name) for lunch and a quick visit of the town. Continue to
San Marcos for lodge and dinner (lodge in San Marcos is basic but
clean and comfortable).
Day 2: CLIMB TAJUMULCO VOLCANO
Early breakfast and drive to "Las Brisas", at the base
of the volcano, where we leave the vehicle and start climbing. This
volcano is not difficult to climb since the altitude at which we
start walking is already quite high (about 9,000 feet), and the
inclination of the terrain is not too steep; however you must consider
that it is the highest peak of Central America (13,715 feet above
sea level). Camp in a small plateau near the summit.
Day 3: VOLCANO TAJUMULCO/SAN MARCOS/GUATE. CITY
Walk to the summit before sunrise, take pictures and enjoy the view.
Back to camp for breakfast. Break camp and walk down to "Las
Brisas". Drive back to Guatemala City (or to Panajachel, Xela,
Chichi or other town in the highlands, depending on your general
itinerary). We arrive at Guate. City late at night.
INCLUDES:
Transportation from Guate. City and back (or to the town designated
in your general itinerary). Meals from dinner on day 1 to breakfast
on day 3. One night hotel at San Marcos (lodge). Expert volcano
guide. Purified water.
NOT INCLUDED:
Breakfast and lunch on day 1, lunch and dinner on day 3. Sodas,
beer or alcoholic beverages. Tips to guide, driver or hotel personnel.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
In these expeditions it is normal that clients provide their own
camping equipment and carry their own backpacks and their water
bottles. If you need camping equipment, we can provide it IF you
let us know in advance. If you want to hire a porter to help carry
your gear, it can be arranged but please let us know in advance.
