RIVER OF CAVES - RIO CANDLARIA

DAY 1 GUATEMALA / COBAN
5:00 pm departure for Coban. Dinner (on your own). Lodging and accommodations
at Posada de Coban.
DAY 2 COBAN / CANDELARIA CAVES
6:00 breakfast (on your own) Board bus for overland trip to Chisec
(5-7 hours) Arrive at first cave called "Cueva Seca".
The entrance to this cave is an immense cavern with murals of the
Maya Indians 20 meters above the cave floor. Spend 1-2 hours exploring
the intricate formations and the towering columns one finds inside
the inner sections of the "Cueva Seca". Board bus for
arrival to the camp of Candelaria and dinner.
Day 3 CANDELARIA CAVES
7:00 breakfast. Early departure to entrance of cave system Veronica.
Four to five hours of the longest cave system on the Rio Candelaria.
Experience the 150 meter Brain room, Marvel at the 25 meter “waterfall”
of flow stone. All combined in mixture of darkness and natural light.
A light bag lunch is carried by each participant. (Time permitting
we will explore the Deer Cave.) Return to camp for dinner.
Day 4 CANDELARIA CAVES
6:00 breakfast. Early departure to entrance of Deer Caves 1 &
2. Enjoy the morning traversing through the variance of rock formations
at leisure paddling through the mild current. A light lunch is carried
by each participant. Arrive at exit of the Deer Cave for a short
hike to awaiting vehicles. Afternoon hike through walking section
of Mico cave, return to campsite for dinner.
Day 5 CAVES / GUATEMALA
Breakfast, early departure for Coban. Picnic lunch en route. Arrive
Guatemala City by late evening
NEED TO BRING:Cavern Head Lamp (available
for rent or sale at Maya Expeditions)
Small backpack
SUGESSTED PERSONAL EQUIPMENT:
2 liter waterbottle (a hydration pack system to wear on your back
is ideal)
1 sweater or polypro jacket for warmth inside the cave
Small backpack
1 pair shoes to get wet (tennis or covered water shoes. Sandals
are not recommended for the caves)
Swimming suit
Shorts
1 T-Shirt
Hat or cap
Insect repellant
Strong eyeglass (or sun glass) holder (available at Maya Expeditions)
Light jacket or raincoat (for the rainy season)
Small duffel with a towel and change of clothes, for the take out
when you get off the river
