Archaeology and whitewater rafting:
Trip Ruins 'n Rafting CODE: COYAJ & NAUAJ
Nahualate River option: We can run the Nahualate
River instead of the Coyolate River using the same time period.
Day 1
Meet at Maya Expedition's office at 6:30 am for 7:00 am departure
(absentees will not be refunded). We then board a bus to Santa Lucía
Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla. We will eat breakfast at a restaurant--your
choice between Guatemalan and continental cuisine.
At 9:30 am we take a short drive to a small village on the river,
where we will have a safety orientation and river instructions.
We then board the rafts for a full day of paddling through the tropical
lowland environment full of lush vegetation. We will catch a glimpse
of the regal Black Hawk, the majestic Blue Heron or the rare Laughing
Falcon, as we face the challenges through teamwork and maneuvering
through the class II-III rapids. Enjoy the picturesque scenery with
spectacular views of many waterfalls cascading 150 feet into the
Coyolate river below. We will have a delicious and plentiful buffet
lunch on the river banks. We will take-out at approximately 4:30
pm and drive back to Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa and Hotel Santiaguito.
Over dinner we can relive all the fun times and challenges as we
recount each experience.
Day 2
We will have an early breakfast and a 7:30 am departure to the site
of Takalik Abaj. At the site we will visit with the experienced
archaeologist Claudia Wolley who will serve as our guide. We can
lunch in a restaurant close to the site then board vehicles for
our return to Guatemala City. En route, we will visit the site of
El Baul and the new archaeological museum in Santa Lucia Cotz. Time
permitting, we will stop and visit the site and museum of La Democracia
in Siquinalá.
