El Peru / Scarlet Macaw Research Station

Day 1 GUATEMALA CITY / BIOLOGICAL STATION LAS GUACAmayaS (SCARLET MACAW)
Fly from Guatemala city Airport to Flores, Peten. Depart Flores for Paso Caballos, the southeastern entrance of Parque Nacional Laguna del Tigre (Tiger Lagoon National Park). Paso Caballos is a Kekchí community located 75 kilometers northwest of Flores. When we arrive at the Rio San Pedro we transport by boat from Paso Caballos to the Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas (EBG). Welcome to the EBG.
Lunch and time to rest.
In the afternoon we have an introductory jungle walk that will take you from the shores of the Río San Pedro through primary forest, ending with a stop at our overlook to view the vast wetlands that lie to the south. Enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge.
For those interested, a guided boat tour on the Río Saclúc, where you will learn about and view nocturnal wildlife, including the Crocodile Moreletii. This is a wonderful way to view night birds and if you want a chance, to catch a crocodile.


Day 2 BIOLOGICAL STATION / ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE EL PERU
Early Breakfast. Board boat for transport to the beach at El Perú where you will begin your walk to the Maya ruins of El Perú, first passing through the archaeological camp IDAEH.
Leaving IDAEH, you will walk towards the Jovontún Caves and then to El Mirador de Los Monos for bird watching and to glimpse spider monkeys as they wend their way through the forest canopy. Walk towards the Principal Plaza of the archaeological site where you will begin your exploration of the four plazas.
During the months January through May, archaeologists may be seen excavating the ruins.
After lunch, visit the nesting area of the scarlet macaw. During the nesting season (January through June) it may be possible to see the scarlet macaw in flight as they return to their nests to feed their young. Return to the beach at El Perú where a boat will be waiting to transport you back to the station. Dinner and overnight at the station.


Day 3: Sunrise birding tour on the Saclúc River. Breakfast, and then enjoy time for relaxing: - Swim in the Río San Pedro, visit our overlook, or browse our visitors' center. Lunch
At 1 p.m. we board our boat for transfer to Paso Caballos. A last farewell to the Rio San Pedro as we head back to Flores to catch our afternoon flight return to Guatemala City.

We can pack lightly for overnight outing to ProPetén´s monitoring station in the El Perú forest.
After visiting the site of El Peru, we will have a light snack then walk bird watching and crocodile spotting at the Laguna El Perú. Dinner then overnight in the monitoring station.

Day 4 BIOLOGY STATION / FLORES / GUATEMALA CITY
Early breakfast for walk back to the Rio San Pedro for transfer to the Station. Lunch and then transfer to Flores for afternoon flight to Guatemala City.
Option:Day 5 BIOLOGY STATION / TIKAL OR PETEXBATUN SITES
Overnight at Tikal for viewing the spectacular natural park of Tikal, or stay longer for visit to the Petexbatun region or Yaxha. There are many possibilities.
