Maya Expeditions believes and supports low impact travel and ecotourism, working with locally based organizations and cooperatives. In 1987 we were pioneers in the adventure travel and ecotourism business in Guatemala. Since 1990 we have dedicated to training Guatemalan guides in the same intensive manner, paying attention to safety and detail as we did within our US operation. We now have over 10 local guides, important to keeping the tourism in the hands of the local people; the only ones who can really help conserve the rainforest. In 1994 we were awarded an International recognition as one of the top 20 eco-outfitters of the world.
