Demarest vs. Demarest / The long held theories of Arthur Demarest, Friedel and others of the Maya Collapse being attributed to Maya warfare and the breakdown of the religious politics or the K'ul Ahau power is being challenged with the new excavations being done at Cancuen.

The largest Maya Imperial Palace yet discovered. The site of Cancuen co-directed by Dr. Arthur Demarest of Vanderbilt University and Lic. Tomas Barrientos of Del Valle University is revealing completely new ceramics unseen before in Meso America. Jade workshops and ceramic workshops abound. Many artists burials although not nobles have rich burial offerings suggesting an economical wealth unknown to non-nobles in other sites. This almost completely secular city is challenging the previous known patterns of Maya way of life.
Join us to watch the restoration of the Palace unfold.
