Archaeology - El Mirador

EL MIRADOR
SAKBE OF THE maya

Dr. Richard Hansen, has created the project Mirador Basin National Park, whose objective is to form, with the help of the Guatemalan government and concerned citizens, a National Park, where archaeological excavation will be carried out and tourist can share in the wonderful discoveries of the great Maya civilization. This park will incorporate the locals and provide education so another means of living can replace the looting and deforestation of the area.

We can do trips to this area all year round, however, during the months of March through May, Maya Expeditions is providing tours to the three cities of the Mirador Basin: El Mirador, Nakbé and Wakná, where we will be guests at the Mirador Basin a project led by Dr. Hansen. With over 27 universities represented and 140 Archaeologists and workers each season excavations will bring them closer to establishing their goal.

The race to discover the tombs and sculptures before the looters continues. The creation of the Mirador Basin National Park is not yet set in stone, however, with your participation and support, you can help make it become a reality.
